How Implus CEO Michael Polk Embraces Hands-On Leadership
When Michael Polk joined Implus LLC in 2020, he traded the boardroom dynamics of a Fortune 500 company for something more direct: working side by side with a smaller team on the daily decisions that shape a business. After his years as CEO of Newell Brands, where he oversaw an organization of more than 50,000 employees, that shift felt less like a step down and more like a homecoming.
From Layers to the Front Line
Polk spent the early part of his career as a marketing and sales executive at companies including Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, and Unilever. When he rose to CEO-level roles at large public companies, much of his time shifted toward resource allocation and working through organizational layers to influence decisions. At Implus, that changed. He now spends far more time doing brand and business development directly with his team. As he put it, he is right there with them in the crucible, helping make the choices that drive the business forward.
Berkshire Partners brought Polk in to lead transformation efforts at Implus, a fitness accessories portfolio company. Under his direction, the company strengthened its operational model, worked through pandemic-related disruptions, and built a foundation for growth in the fitness and lifestyle consumer goods space.
Developing Leaders Along the Way
One of the things Michael Polk Newell Brands finds most meaningful about his work at Implus is watching his team grow. He has noted that one of the most rewarding aspects of his tenure has been to lead and witness the professional growth of his team through the work they are doing to strengthen the company.
At smaller companies, junior employees step into bigger leadership roles earlier than they would at large organizations. They grow and learn by doing, Polk says. Senior leaders, in turn, take on a player-coach role, providing guidance that is more direct and hands-on than what is possible in a sprawling public company. For Polk, that dynamic makes private company leadership genuinely exciting. Refer to this article for more information.
