Culture rarely gets mentioned in oil and gas coverage, yet it comes up again and again in Gulf Coast Western reviews from people who have worked directly with the company’s leadership.

An Unlikely Path to the Corner Office

Matthew Fleeger’s connection to Gulf Coast Western dates back to 1970, when his father, Thomas H. Fleeger, launched the Dallas firm while Matthew was still attending Southern Methodist University. After earning a finance and marketing degree in 1985, he worked at his father’s company and several other Texas businesses before striking out on his own. In 1993, he founded MedSolutions Inc., a medical waste treatment and disposal firm that grew quickly enough to attract a buyer. He sold it to Stericycle in 2007 for close to $59 million, then returned to Gulf Coast Western as President and CEO in 2009.

Attitude Over Résumé

Fleeger has said publicly that the quality he values most in his own leadership has less to do with technical skill than with mindset. “Having a positive attitude in the face of adversity. I believe this is a contagious mindset for everyone and is required in every successful leader,” he has said. That outlook seems to inform the tone investors describe when they leave Gulf Coast Western reviews praising the responsiveness of the company’s staff.

Fleeger also directs some of that energy outside the office. He supports the Sadie Keller Foundation, started by a childhood leukemia survivor to help families of children with cancer and raise awareness of pediatric cancer research funding, and he backs Parish Episcopal School in Dallas for its work preparing students in science, technology, engineering and math.

For a company built on the general partnerships and joint ventures that define Gulf Coast Western’s core business, that combination of a steady disposition and outside philanthropy has become part of what current and former partners point to when explaining why they keep coming back to invest again.
